Kerbey Lane Cafe on South Lamar has been a destination 24-7-365 since 1986, and while it has a counter and a flow and feng shui and all that, most people can tell you without even looking that the place wasn't built to be a diner. It may be a diner now, but only because determined people made it that way. And it won't be a diner for long now, as KLC South is moving up the street a few blocks closer to what was the Alligator Grill (that ain't there no more). From the Statesman story:
In addition to extra room for diners, the move to the Corners shopping center at 3005 S. Lamar Blvd. will allow for a bigger kitchen, patio dining and more parking.
It's no secret that I worked at that KLC location (and loved it) back in 2010, and while I worked with well and deliciously seasoned staff who had been with the company for ages, no one could tell me what the building on South Lamar was originally.
Does anyone know? Kelso? Some other old fogey who reads and remembers our town? The easiest guess I can make is some kind of auto parts store - duh. South Lamar is a defacto auto parts district.

It was the Texicali Grill before it was Kerbey Lane. Danny Young moved the Texicali Grill into the building behind it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ray! The dining room and counter feel like a restaurant, but the kitchen is so small and the restrooms awkwardly placed.
ReplyDeleteBefore Texicali it was a Burger Chef.
